      <image:title>About - About Julie Lancaster</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve been a freelance business writer, editor, and desktop publisher since 1984, but writing has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Thanks to the astute Miss Shock, for example, my fourth-grade class at Denver’s Washington Park Elementary School did a full-costume production of my play, “The Pharaoh’s Daughter.” At the University of Colorado I spurned the logical majors, such as English and journalism, and got a bachelor’s degree in Mandarin Chinese (no, I don’t speak it today) with a minor in French. This focus on languages gave me a deep appreciation for structure and grammar and sharpened my instincts for clear communication. After college, I worked at a packaged-seed-and-gift company and then at a button company — both small, wholesale companies run by entrepreneurs with a zest for detail. Working in various departments, I learned the ropes of operating a small business and found my bosses consulting with me frequently about internal and marketing communications. Since starting Business Writing Services, I’ve worked with dozens of clients on hundreds of projects. Starting as a one-woman shop, I’ve always enlisted the services of other writers, editors, proofreaders, designers, indexers, IT people, etc., as necessary to get the job done. In recent years I’ve worked with a series of wonderful part-time assistants, the current one being marketing whiz Erin Bonich. Unlike many professional writers and editors, I don’t have a novel festering within. That’s because I burn off my excess creative energy in music. But that’s another Website. If you like what you read here and want to discuss a writing project for your business or organization, please give us a call.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Need Life Size Tiny Communities, located near Denver, Colo., develops communities for movable tiny houses. Their original business plan needed to be updated and expanded for potential funders. Action We worked with the client over several weeks, learning about their business, their industry and the regulatory environment. We helped get their thoughts onto paper in words, graphics, and new charts and tables that we developed. The result: a compelling business plan ready to present to funders. What the Client Said “I applaud your efforts that you have put into helping create this functional business plan compared to what I originally set off with. You’ve taken all the bits of information that I have given you and created a true narrative of how we’re going to do this. It is fantastic.”</image:caption>

She had long wanted to open a small coffee shop serving fine European pastries in Aurora, CO. She had savings and a co-investor, but they needed a business plan to secure additional funding. Action We interviewed the client, asking questions about all aspects of the business she envisioned. She provided all the financial statements needed, using templates we furnished. She had a plethora of photographs of beautiful cakes and pastries she had made in the past. There was more drooling than usual involved in writing this business plan. Outcome HiRa Café and Patisserie is open, operating, and serving delicious and beautiful pastries. Check it out next time you are in Aurora.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Need Savant Consultants, LLC, an executive jet management company, needed to prepare two proposals: a three-page letter to a client and a longer, formal proposal to a bank. We were already familiar with their business, having created a website for their Blue Skies Aviation division two years before. Action Over a series of interviews and back-and-forth editing, we helped the client craft two substantive and convincing proposals. Outcome After the proposals were submitted, they both encountered month-long delays. But, eventually, both were successful. The client said, “It’s been a long road to get there, but the proposals themselves were spot on.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Need Serenity Sliding Door Systems, in Colorado Springs, CO, needed an installation manual for its sliding door system used in health care settings. Up to now, company employees had been installing the doors using various informal instructions and checklists, but now outside contractors would be doing the installations. They needed a professional manual. Action We made multiple site visits to the company to work with their installation expert. He talked us through every step while demonstrating hands-on, saying, “It’s easier to show it to you than to explain it to you.” After photographing the parts involved and asking questions until we understood, we wrote a first draft, then refined additional drafts with the help of other company employees. Outcome The result: a 24-page manual with all steps explained in words and illustrated with photos or rudimentary drawings, ready to go to the designer for professional graphic treatment. A few months later, the customer told us, “We’re sending it out every day now.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Need NIFA, the National Institute for First Assisting, located in Centennial, CO, offers online training and in-person workshops for registered nurses who want to become First Assistants at surgery. Back in 2008, the company wanted to enhance their relationship marketing by adding a monthly newsletter that would provide value to their readers. That’s when they called us. Action We worked with NIFA to plan, design, and implement a newsletter for their students, graduates, and prospective students. Thirteen + years later, we continue to coordinate the monthly newsletter, including acquiring student profiles, writing occasional articles, and linking to outside content of interest to the readers. What the Client Said “Julie consistently helps develop interesting content that delivers value to our readers while also telling our company story. She has been quietly building a community with the newsletter that can only help our bottom line.” – Jerry M. Kekos, CEO</image:caption>

      <image:title>Proposal Case Study 2 - Proposal for a Municipal Tennis Program</image:title>
<image:caption>Need NETRESULTS Tennis has been operating municipal tennis centers throughout the East Coast since 1990. They use a progressive instructional methodology with a high cardio component and offer a vast range of events and match opportunities. In 2018, as they were preparing a response to a municipal RFP (request for proposal) in hopes of renewing their existing contract, they realized their current materials felt dated and tired. They didn’t do justice to NETRESULTS’ exciting programs nor their high standards of professionalism. Action We worked closely with the client over several weeks, using text, tables, and graphics to convey more clearly the value that NETRESULTS brings to a municipality. We fine-tooth-combed the city’s large and ungainly RFP to ensure that every element mentioned was properly addressed in the 62-page proposal. Outcome NETRESULTS won the contract! In fact, in 2021, when the contract was up for bid again, they came back to us, wanting to step up their game with an even better proposal. The resulting 104-page proposal helped them win that contract renewal, too. What the Client Said In 2018: “Our proposal won a lot of kudos from the city staff that read it. Between the quality of the proposal and our track record, I think it worked really well, and your services were worth the investment.” In 2021: “Very much appreciate your efforts and timeliness in getting this proposal together. The fact that you do such a fine job of reading through and finding exactly what they are looking to have presented, that's huge for me!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Business Plan Case Study 3 - Need: Business Plan for a Brewing Company</image:title>
<image:caption>Bringing a Dream to Life A few years ago we got a call from a man who was working as an assistant brewer in Denver. After years of working in various commercial brewing environments, he was ready to pursue the dream of opening his own artisan brewery, focusing on hoppy ales and mixed-culture farmhouse ales. He had already identified a location in the quaint mountain town of Nederland, Colorado, and written a preliminary, 14-page business plan. He had secured some investors but needed more, as well as a bank loan. We didn’t know much about beer but were happy to dive in and learn. Action Over the next couple of months, we interviewed this founder and helped him get his well-thought-out plans onto paper in a way that would be accessible to non-subject-matter experts. Along the way, we researched the industry so as to better understand brewing methods and equipment, beer distribution models, and demographics of craft beer drinkers. Gradually, over many drafts passed back and forth between the founder and our office, we came up with an in-depth, solid business plan that laid a real blueprint for the company’s eventual opening and operation. What the Client Said “Thanks again for all your help with the business plan as that was a major factor in selling our vision to investors!” said Chris Marchio, Knotted Root Brewing Company. The company is making distinctive ales and sours, and regularly offering tastings and other events at their brewery in Nederland. Check them out!</image:caption>
